The 15th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Machine Translation will take place May 30-31 at the Faculty of Arts of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.
REMEMBER: Early registration is open until April 29.
The EAMT meetings are intended to provide a forum for researchers, commercial developers and users to exchange ideas concerning all aspects of Machine Translation and translation-related tools and resources. The aim is to present recent research and current state-of-the-art in the area, explore emerging R&D trends, provide information about evaluation techniques and tools, and review the translation needs and the uses of translation technologies by government and industry.
This year's programme includes oral and poster presentations of both user papers and research papers, a poster session about European machine translation projects, and "A Tale of Two Technologies" an invited lecture by Fred Hollowood (Symantec).

"La scena e il corpo"

Lorenzo Donati (critico teatrale, Altre Velocità) incontra: Laura Redaelli (attrice, Teatro delle Albe), Monica Francia (coreografa, Associazione Cantieri), Franck Viderot (studioso e danzatore, tradizione animista africana), Lanfranco Vicari (rapper, Il lato oscuro della costa), Fausto Spighi (breaker, Lasagna Style).
«Essere nel mondo non è uno spettacolo», dice il filosofo Jean-Luc Nancy, è un «essere gettati», è scontro e mischia. Il progetto dell'esistenza incorpora però anche il mostrarsi, il diventare «presenza», attraverso lo sguardo dell'altro.
A sua volta, il corpo scenico è carico di tensioni e di una precisione che non si trova nell'uso quotidiano: ritaglia, seleziona, enfatizza e omette alcuni tratti del corpo quotidiano convertendolo in un corpo che non funziona a partire dalle convenzioni sociali, ma che altera il suo equilibrio e si coagula nella composizione poetica, focalizzando l'attenzione su di sé.
La danza, il gesto attoriale, il linguaggio hip hop, ma anche il sacro che pervade non solo le danze e i rituali, ma tutta la vita quotidiana nella tradizione animista, come mettono in scena il corpo?

Quest’edizione, dedicata alla poetessa messicana Susana Chavez, uccisa recentemente proprio a causa delle sue poesie di impegno sociale, presenta diversi saggi e articoli inediti in Italia: “Milano”, della più grande poetessa brasiliana del Novecento, Cecília Meireles, “Corsera, Matvejevic: storte Drine italiane” di Bozidar Stanisic’”, “È ora di parlare di letteratura italiana. Se non ora, quando?” di Armando Gnisci; ", “Una natura diversa in un mondo diverso dal nostro” di Gabriel Garcia Márquez, e testi di Carla Benedetti, Serge Latouche, Guy Debord, Vito Teti, Loretta Emiri e Tomaso Pieragnolo.
L’Editoriale di questa edizione, di Julio Monteiro Martins, “Il passaggio della luce sulla carta” parla del destino del libro come oggetto e delle nuove tecnologie come i lettori di e-book.
In Narrativa ci sono quattro traduzioni inedite: un brevissimo racconto di Arthur Clarke; il testo "Crollo mortale" di James G. Ballard, che tratta di un ipotetico crollo (provocato) della Torre di Pisa in un futuro non molto lontano; “Copacabana” della scrittrice del Quebec Claire Varin, su un naufragio nella notte di Capodanno durante le festività nella baia di Guanabara e la traduzione del racconto "Gli occhi di Jimmy Carter" dello scrittore nigeriano E.C. Osondu, oltre a brani di autori come Ernst Jünger, Natalia Ginzburg, Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Milva Cappelini, Kristin Marja Baldursdóttir e un inedito di Antonello Piana ambientato in una lugubre Berlino novecentesca.
In Poesia, cinque poesie inedite di Susana Chavez, a cui è dedicata questa edizione, oltre a poesie di Charles Bukowski, Sylvia Plath, una raccolta di poeti contemporanei del Costa Rica e traduzioni inedite dei versi di Angela Carter, Billy Collins e Dora Gabe, oltre a poesie in anteprima di Pina Piccolo, “Mediterraneo 2011:Terzo capo d’accusa” e di Carlo Bordini, “Preghiera”. E ci sono anche i racconti e le poesie dei nuovi autori nella sezione Vento Nuovo.

Il sangue verdeha vinto il Premio Acra al Festival di cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina, che si è svolto a Milano dal 21 al 27 marzo 2011. Il premio è stato assegnato da una Giuria composta da cinque rappresentanti di comunità migranti in Italia.
Laboratori
27 aprile – Tornano i laboratori audiovisivi diLapa TVper i bambini della scuola elementare dell'isola di Stromboli. Il cortometraggio di animazione realizzato durante l'edizione 2010 (Animazione sotto il Vulcano) ha ricevuto il Premio Unicef al Festival Sottodiciottodi Torino "per l'impegno, nonostante la piccola comunità di bambini, a proporre agli alunni attività creative ed educative e, inoltre, per averli coinvolti – attraverso l'uso del linguaggio dell'animazione – in un rapporto stretto con le materie prime naturali del loro ambiente e averli sensibilizzati al rispetto e alla conservazione del territorio" . I laboratori di Lapa TV saranno a Stromboli dal 27 al 14 maggio 2011.

Overview

The Workshop aims at bringing various groups together who are concerned with the broad topic of "Language Technology for a multilingual Europe".
This encompasses on the one hand representatives from research and development in the field of language technologies, on the other hand users from quite divers areas. Two examples of the application of language technology is (automatic / machine) translation, and processing of texts from the humanities with methods from language technology, like automatic topic indexing, text mining, integrating numerous texts and additional information across languages etc.
These kinds of application areas and research and development in language technology have in common that they rely on resources (lexica, corpora, grammars, ontologies etc.), or that they produce these resources. A multilingual Europe, being supported by language technology, is only possible if an adequate, interoperable infrastructure of resources, including the related tooling, is available for all European languages.
In addition it is necessary that the aforementioned and other communities of developers and users of language technology stand as one, homogenous community. Only in this way it will be possible to assure the long-term political acceptance of the topic "language technology" in Europe.

The workshop aims at brining research and development from academia and industry together, to discuss the aforementioned technical and political prerequisites for language technology in Europe. Submissions may touch on the following or other aspects of this overall topic:
– Research and development of language technology in various areas
(Human Language Technology, ICT, eHumanities, …)
– Infrastructure for resources in language technology
– Prerequisites for interoperability of language technology based
applications
– Language technology and standardization
– "Political perspectives" about requirements and the usefulness of
language technology, from the perspective of research, industry and
various user communities.

The evaluation of abstracts for posters will be anonymous. Hence, the authors should not be mentioned directly in the abstract. Submissions for system demonstrations need not to be anonymous.
Length and format: max. 2 pages in 11pt (without references), PDF.

First Call for Papers
Cross lingual information access (CLIA) is concerned with any technologies and applications that enable people to freely access information that is expressed in any languages. With the rapid development of globalization and digital online information in Internet, huge demand for cross lingual information access has emerged from ordinary netizens (polyglots or monoglots) who are surfing the Internet for special information (e.g. travelling, product description), and communicating in soaring social networks (e.g. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Myspace), to global companies which provide multilingual services to their multinational customers, and governments who aim to lower the barriers to international commerce and collaboration, and homeland security. This huge demand has triggered vigorous research and development in CLIA.
This workshop is a continuous effort to address the need of cross-lingual information access on top of its previous four issues which were held during IJCAI 2007 in Hyderabad, IJCNLP 2008 in Hyderabad, NAACL 2009 in Colorado, and COLING 2010 in Beijing. It aims to bring together researchers from a variety of fields such as information retrieval, computational linguistics, machine translation, and digital library, and practitioners from government and industry to address the issues of information need of multilingual society. We also would like to promote and emphasize the potential contributions of NLP and computational linguistic aspects to CLIA, in addition to the previously better represented viewpoint from Information Retrieval. Specifically, the key interests are in:
1. Novel methods to mine knowledge from multilingual corpora using CL and/or NLP techniques.
2. Techniques to customize machine translation in order to satisfy the special requirements of CLIA.
3. Methods to adapt the existing CL/NLP approaches in information extraction, question answering, summarization, categorization, sentiment analysis, opinion extraction from a monolingual context to a multilingual context.
4. Techniques for leveraging multilingual resources to improve the performance of monolingual information access.
We thus solicit submissions in, but not limited to, the following topics:
General CLIA:

– Domain specific multilingual information access
– Cross-lingual cross media search (speech, video, audio)
– Machine Learning for multilingual information access -Scalability issues in multilingual information access/ system evaluation
– Web-scale cross-lingual search
Machine translation in CLIA:
– Interaction between cross-language information retrieval and machine translation -Query translation and document translation -Developing statistical machine translation on large-scale multilingual corpora
– Domain adaptation in machine translation
– Multilingual / Cross-lingual named entity recognition
NLP/CL/IR for CLIA:
– Multilingual summarization
– Multilingual information extraction
– Multilingual question answering
– Multilingual text categorization and clustering
– Multilingual opinion study and sentiment analysis
-Monolingual processing leveraging on multilingual resources
CLIA evaluation and deployment:
-CLIA user studies and user-centric evaluation
– CLIA system deployment on social networks (e.g., Facebook or Twitter) or handheld computers or smartphones (e.g., iPad or iPhone)
Multilingual knowledge acquisition:
– Acquisition of multilingual parallel/comparable/non- comparable corpora
– Multilingual document/sentence/word alignment
– Multilingual lexicon/term extraction
-Multilingual new words / named entity detection and translation
Submissions:
Authors are invited to submit papers on original, unpublished work on the topics of this workshop. Submissions should follow the IJCNLP 2011 length and formatting requirements for long papers of eight (8) pages of contents with two (2) additional pages of references, and for short papers of two (4) pages of contents with two (2) additional pages of references. A detailed abstract with two (2) pages to address your on-going work is also welcome.
