Kalasha – The White Tribe of Pakistan

Wonders of Pakistan

The Kalasha of Chitral or simply Kalasha, are an ethnic group living in the Hindu Kush region of Pakistan. They are [probably] an ancient Dard people who speak the Kalasha-mun language, have light skin, eyes, and hair, similar to what one would find in Southern Europe.
Many Kalash claim that they are the direct descendants of either Greek settlers, Alexander the Great’s army, or even Alexander himself. The claims are questionable, as there is proof of their existence before Alexander’s invasion of the Persian Empire.
One theory suggests that similarities in the culture of the Kalasha and Greek people stem from the expansion of Proto-Indo-Europeans.
It is important to note that there is no current connection between the Kalasha of Chitral and the Kalasha of Nuristan. These two populations descend from different branches of the Indo-Iranians, a division that goes back some 5,000 years.

Interim-Exhibition “Frederic Spreckelmeyer!” 31.01., 6-9pm

Press Release: German / English

Interim-Ausstellung:
„Frederic Spreckelmeyer!“

31.01.2015–07.01.2015

Vernissage: Sa. 31.01.2015, 18–21 Uhr
Finissage: Sa. 07.02.2015, 18–21 Uhr

Vernissage: Sa. 31.01.2015, 6–9 pm
Finissage: Sa. 07.02.2015, 6–9 pm

Greusslich Contemporary is pleased to cordially invite you, an interim exhibition by Frederic Spreckelmeyer. An impressionable visit to Spreckelmeyer’s atelier, at which I discovered works that evoke precise recollections on art, science and interpretive world history, led me to offer him a brief yet incisive interim exhibition.

His works are sculptures or three dimensional wall objects, by which he idiosyncratically traces a theme or concept which one encounters further in the title of the work. Theoretical fragments of his research become translated into constructions and unified in compositions. To this end Spreckelmeyer uses materials such as wood, metal, screws, cord, or light integration which are then clad with color gradients, color accentuation, or painting. In these processes one encounters, from the painting to the screw joinery, an alternation of loving devotion to detail and pragmatic craftsmanship.

With a certain antiquarian look-and-feel, one is struck by a refreshing freedom which ensouls these objects, as if they contain representations and formulae which have invited, or yet invite, one to rise to a higher state of knowledge and experience.

Frederic Spreckelmeyer (*1983, Osnabrück) studied at the Akademie in Münster, and lives and works in Berlin.
