Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies
Competition in 2012 for Manuscripts Accepted for Publication in 2011–12
Open Only to Members of the Association Currently Residing in the United States or Canada
The Committee on Honors and Awards of the Modern Language Association invites authors to enter the competition for the fifteenth Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies. The prize is awarded each year to an author of an outstanding manuscript dealing with any aspect of the languages and literatures of Italy, including medieval Latin and comparative studies or intellectual history if the work’s main thrust is clearly related to the humanities. Materials from ancient Rome are eligible if related to postclassical developments. Also eligible are translations of classical works of prose and poetry produced in Italy prior to 1900 in any language (e.g., neo-Latin, Greek) or in a dialect of Italian (e.g., Neapolitan, Roman, Sicilian). Eligible are book manuscripts in English or Italian that are ready for submission or already submitted to a press. If manuscripts are under consideration or accepted for publication by presses, all presses must be not-for-profit and members of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP). Prizewinners may only publish with not-for-profit members of the AAUP. Dissertations that have been substantially revised and transformed into publication-ready book manuscripts are also eligible; unrevised dissertations are not. Manuscripts may be submitted by authors or by not-for-profit, AAUP-member presses. To the author, the prize provides a cash award and a certificate. In addition, if the manuscript is published within five years, the not-for-profit, AAUP-member press that publishes the manuscript will be paid a subvention. The winning manuscript will be announced at the association’s annual convention in January 2013.
To enter, applicants should send four copies of the manuscript accompanied by a letter containing the following information: full name, title, address, telephone number, and e-mail address of publisher’s representative; full name, address(es), telephone number(s), and e-mail address of each author; academic title and affiliation, if applicable; alternate addresses and telephone numbers for vacation periods, if longer than three weeks; advanced degrees held by author(s), dates of degrees, and institutions that granted them; titles of prior publications (books, articles, reviews); citations or reviews authors have received for their work; other scholarly achievements, awards, or projects.
The application deadline is 1 August 2012, and the manuscript must have been either accepted by publishers or completed between 2 August 2011 and 31 July 2012. An application should include a brief description of the research project and its results as represented by the manuscript; an outline of the contents of the manuscript; and names and addresses of scholars who have reviewed the manuscript and of others the applicant considers qualified to do so or readers’ reports if available. Send manuscripts and accompanying materials to the Scaglione Publication Award, Modern Language Association, 26 Broadway, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10004-1789 (646 576-5141; awards). All materials will be considered strictly confidential.
